In some diets the decisions that are very important include what they eat, when they eat it, and the amount of exercise they do in order to burn off as much fat, calories, and carbohydrates as possible. Peaches make a fantastic component to a calorie controlled diet. In any eating plan it is good to have variety.

Some of the other nutrients contained in a peach is vitamin B, vitamin C, riboflavin, niacin, calcium, iron, phosphorus, and protein.  There is 9 grams of sugar, which isn’t too desirable, but that’s actually very low compared to a lot of other fruits.

The average recommended daily intake for an adult is 2000 calories but this varies from person to person. There are many varieties of peaches. Some have yellow flesh while others have white flesh. All have red streaks. Some have clingstone pits that cling to the flesh of the fruit. Others have freestone pits that remove easily. Nectarines are actually a type of peach that have no fuzz.

The most common peaches offered in supermarkets are freestone peaches. These peaches are juicy and soft and easy to pit. The Elegant Lady is a classic example of a popular freestone peach. It has an excellent flavor with a yellow flesh that is bright red at the pit. The skin is mostly dark red and it has short fuzz. John Henry, Rich Lady, Summer Zee and Zee Lady are other popular varieties of freestone peaches.

Cling stone peaches are more firm and are often canned. These are often found at farmers markets. White peaches have a pink skin and a sweeter and less acidic white flesh. These prized peaches are the preferred type of peach in Asia and are becoming more available in the U.S. market. Donut peaches are flat with white flesh and low acid. They are juicy and sweet. Nectarines are redder smaller and sweeter than other peaches. They are also a bit more acidic. Honey Kist, Diamond Ray, Spring Bright, Summer Bright and Summer Fire are all popular varieties of nectarines.

Peach crops peak between May and September each year so fresh peaches are readily available during the summer months in supermarkets and farmers markets. Canned and frozen peaches are available year round.

Given the low amount of calories in a peach they are a great snack all year round.
